Prosthetic reconstruction is used in cases where a facial defect can not be reconstructed by way of plastic surgery. A facial prosthesis is a life-like, soft prosthesis made of medical silicone. The facial prosthesis, or epithesis, is custom-made and adjusted to match the natural shape and colour. An ear prosthesis, for example, is created to exactly resemble the patient’s remaining ear.
A facial prosthesis can be attached in different ways – physical retention, skin glue, or titanium implants fixed to the bone. The chosen method depends on the patients individual requirements. Normally a facial prosthesis is a long-term solution, but it can also be used temporarily while awaiting future reconstructive surgery.
